PIERLUIGI GORINI, art director
for Otel Varietè. He has more than1000 shows
in his repertoire and has worked with hosts such as
Tony Hadley and Mario Bionde.

What do you do for a living?
- Art Director at Otel.

What does an art director do?
- Psychologist, you always have to be careful
what happens in the dressing room between the artists
and the dance troupe trying to maintain 
BALANCE. It isn’t easy, but then when you see the result on stage it is great.

How do you start your day?
- I eat.

Describe your day in 45 seconds.
- At 9 o’clock I wake up, leave home at 10, arrive
at work and start answering the mail. I create
projects and estimate costs. I’m responsible
for my part of the space (the show) then in the evening
when the place is closed I return happily
home to the couch. Otherwise, I am there for the show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

How does fashion factor into your work?
- … Every day I must pay attention to fashion
although I am also sensitive to taste. The idea is to create your own fashion style, depending on the trends of the period. However, each period has its own fashion and can follow something that is much more personal and not necessarily follow the dictates of big names or big shops …

Which show do you remember most?
- I remember them all, a little bit because I remember 1,058 of them, but if I think of one in particular I have to say the ones with Mario Biondi. It has been an honor and a pleasure to have a character such as Mario in my shows. He is a person of great talent and great humility.

If you could wish something for humanity what would it be?
- I wish people would listen to those around them and be more polite. I would really like that a lot.

AKIKO KONDO, painter, mother and wife, living in Italy for 20 years. She creates modern works of art with a sense of the ancient Orient using traditional Japanese techniques.

What is your style?
- What I happen to put together…

What is your inspiration?
- Very often Italian and French art along with traditional Japanese. I studied both, French painting from 1700 to 1800, and the Italian Renaissance.  From there I develop a figurative style that is abstract.

When did you start painting?
- When I was 15.

When do you usually work?
- When my son is at school or when he is sleeping… it’s hard, almost impossible …

If you could be any artist who would you be?
- It’s difficult to choose because there are so many…perhaps one of the Renaissance painters, such as Leonardo da Vinci. I’d like to find out how he worked and how he thought.

Would you prefer to be insanely rich or immortal?
- Neither.

Tell us something about your background.
- I did a lot of abstract figurative painting. Today, I am looking to revive a traditional Japanese painting technique. In 1600-1800 they used a lot of silver leaf and gold leaf on which they then painted.  I work often with this technique, but instead of using oil paint pigments I am looking to combine my traditional Japanese techniques with modern materials in an innovative way.

Who is your favorite artist?
- Michelangelo.

If a genie gave you three wishes what would they be?
- The health of my child, the health of my family and no more earthquakes…

The colors are powder pigments that were mixed together in order not to interfere in their purity, but overlaid for bright glazes. These repetitive steps, almost ritualistic, penetrate to gradually reach the refined and controlled tones. The elegance of the compositions of this technique is achieved through the brilliance of gold and silver leaf. Traditional Japanese art made extensive use of these precious foundations. The glitter of powdered calcite crystals provides additional light to the work. The result creates a sort of delicate and opalescent amalgam.

MARCO VEZZOSI, bartender at AIBES International. He has worked for large hotels and 5-star exclusive clubs in Italy and Singapore. His favorite drink is a vodka martini with a raw shrimp. He loves dubstep and now works in FLET, the new trendy watering hole in Florence.

What do you do to pay the bills?
- I make drinks.

Why did you start bar tending?
- Out of necessity. I wanted to travel, then the trip became my job for life.

How do you start your day?
- My life outside work that’s not going on during the night…? I wake up, prepare coffee, breakfast, newspaper, cigarette and then go to work.

What place would you say influenced you most?
- Singapore last year. I learned how to make a drink in a different way, to better understand who is in front of me and the environment that they are in.

If we open your fridge right now what would we find?
- Since there was a staff meeting at my house recently, beer, beer, beer, and perhaps something to eat, but not much …

What do you drink when you go out?
- Lately, beer.
